Summer is almost here! We know teachers and families alike are looking forward to taking a break and maybe planning some cool summer fun. At the same time, there’s a nagging worry in the back of your mind: “What if my students forget everything they learned over the summer?”

Two adults are proudly and encouragingly looking at a young person with a cochlear implant, a “Class of 2024” shirt, and a giant marker in hand.

The summer slide is real, but is not inevitable. Here at Deafverse, we’ve got some great resources to help your deaf students set goals and continue to build self-determination skills through the summer while meeting their goals.

The National Deaf Center (NDC) team built a fun, interactive worksheet to help students define their own goals and start working toward them. The Choose Your Future (CYF) Activity Kit feels like building the comic-book version of yourself — it’s a creative way to figure out who you want to be!

The Activity Kit is designed for high school students ready to start the next stage in their lives, but can work for anyone who is making a big change. The worksheet encourages self-determination development with questions about themselves, their identities, their interests, their strengths, and what they want to achieve in their lives.

For instance, one activity encourages students to explore their neighborhood and make their own town map. Students can learn new things about their hometown, or explore somewhere new — like a college campus.

The CYF Activity Kit can be used in the classroom or assigned as extra credit. But should that be the only opportunity for your students to practice self-determination? There’s more that you can use to boost the CYF Activity Kit!

The CYF Activity Kit is an expansion to the Player Strategy Guide for Deafverse that can be used at home or in the classroom. Use the Self-Determined Learning Model of Instruction (SDLMI) to equip yourself with the knowledge you need to support your students further on developing their skills.
